Dollar Rent A Car....never again
We were in Las Vegas a little over a week ago and rented a car from Dollar. When we arrived at the rental center (Las Vegas has one offsite location for all the companies) we were dismayed at the sight of a long line while *ALL* the other companies had very short ones. We spent more time in the rental center than we did on the flight to Las Vegas. To top it off, the agent wasn't very friendly and pushy, the contract was overly nit picky, the car ended up having a slow leak in one tire, and generally left me with a bad taste. I'll never rent a car from Dollar again.

New Star Trek Movie
I saw the new Star Trek movie yesterday. I don't consider myself a trekie. I've seen most of the original series but none of descendant ones. The movie was very entertaining and I recommend it for those who also were fans of the orginal series.

There's always next year...
What a disappointing end to the hockey season. The sharks were outplayed in the playoffs and I can't say that they should have won. Seems to me I said the same thing last season when we lost to dallas. The entire last month of the season seemed lack-luster and I figured that the sharks were just in a "let's just get on with the playoffs" mindset. It'll be interesting to see what roster changes occur during the off-season. Hopefully the core of the team remains though I sort of doubt it.

Sierra Nevada Brewery Restaurant
Last weekend we were in Chico and visited the Sierra Nevada Brewery. We weren't able to take a tour of the brewery but ate at their restaurant (http://www.sierranevada.com/taproom/taproom.html). It was very, very good. In fact, so much so that we ate their both dinners that we were up there. We all enjoyed the food, I enjoyed the beer (especially the sampler of sixteen different beers), and we all shared creme brule both nights.

San Jose Sharks
You'd think that being the President's Cup winner I'd be fairly confident that the Sharks will beat the Ducks in their first round Stanley Cup Playoff series. But being that we've (us sharks fans) have seen too many early exits in the past few years there's some doubt in my mind. Hopefully the same thing isn't happening to the players and that they have their minds on each individual game at a time.

Minimal Hockey Game...
Take the best team and worst team in the Western conference and what'd you get? Three periods plus overtime with no score. One single goal during the shootout. I'd call that a minimally offensive hockey game.

Another day another earthquake
We had a minor 4.6 earthquake today and I didn't feel it. This surprised the folks around me here at work but I was busy concentrating on a technical issue. Wonder how big an earthquake I could zone through?

Another nail in the newspaper coffin
We cancelled our daily subscription to the local newspaper changing to Sundays only. As far as I recall this is the first time in my life, going all the way back to my childhood, that I don't have the newspaper delivered daily to the house. Whatever happened to the old days when the neighborhood kids would wake up each morning to bundle their papers and then deliver them. I never had a route but helped friends on numerous occasions. When did this die out?

And work goes on...
It's great, especially given the current economy and lack of available jobs, to have survived the layoff of last week. But....we lost 20% of our group (1 of 5) and the amount of work remains the same. I guess I can't complain as I'm sure there's 500+ folks that would trade places.

Shout out to Nater. Barge is July 28 - August 2. You have plenty of time to plan...and bring Sager too!

Best Place To Get Layed Off From...
Two weeks ago the company I work for was choosen as the number one place to work. This week 500+ were let go. It wasn't the first lay off that I have been through (and fortunately I have survived through all of them)...but it was disheartening the same. I think the older I get the more sensitive I am to this type of thing. I wish all of them well in their search for new jobs.

Las Vegas and Bruce Springsteen
My wife and I spent Thur - Sunday in Las Vegas (Thank you to my mother-in-law for watching the girls!!!). Didn't play a lot of poker (4.5 hours total) but it was profitable. Saw a couple of shows and ate meals in real restaurants...both of which I don't do when I'm in LV with the guys. We flew back in time to make it to a Superbowl party. Lots of friends, kids, food, and drink. Game was very entertaining.

Springsteen opens his tour in San Jose on April 1 and I scored a couple of lower level tickets. His new CD, purchased from Amazon, arrive during the weekend and I haven't had a chance yet to listen to it. Bruce's performance during the Superbowl half time was awesome. So it appears he is already in shape for the upcoming tour.

Family History
My daughter is doing a family project for her second grade class and as part of it we did some family research...calling my dad to ask some questions about my grandfather, my daughter's great-grandfather. Anyways, it turns out my grandfather came to the United States to work on a Hawaiian plantation and while there he "mail ordered" his wife. She lived in the same general area of Japan that he had but he had no prior contact with her before the arrangement. All this before match.com even existed.

facebook
I recently was introduced to the facebook social networking site by an invite from one of my coworkers. I previously thought it was a site that catered to the younger "hip" crowd but found a number of my colleagues already there. And then I found my older kids were there, and friends from high school, and some of my current friends. It's kind of neat to see what everyone is doing (at least those that update their "status"), but it's also kind of scarey in that all those people can see whatever you put up. Definitely something to keep in mind.

A journal entry by [info]schmengie brought back memories as he posted a video of one of the songs from the Kansas Leftoverture album. It was the first LP that I ever bought. The second album was News of the World by Queen. I don't recall what was third. Ah, to be young again with tolerance for loud music...

The Sharks Lost Tonight And....
I didn't get to watch the game as we got home after it was done. These east coast games are too early :-) Tomorrow's game is also early and we have dinner plans so don't be surprised if they lose. Though if they win I can still claim that they always win (this year) when I watch and sometimes when I don't. I could live with that and I think the team could also.
